Will the Village prune my parkway tree?
The Village Forester manages a cyclic pruning program to improve and maintain our historic urban forest. Each year, 1 of 5 designated sections in town will be addressed and evaluated for tree maintenance. The program ensures that every tree within the Village is properly maintained over a 5 year rotational period.
Mature trees are trimmed to remove dead limbs while younger trees are pruned to improve overall structure. The Village prefers to perform tree pruning during the dormant season but can receive and evaluate your concerns to determine the best course of action.
2.
How can I get a tree planted on my parkway?
The Forester implements a Cooperative Tree Planting program throughout the Village. Typically, we will begin taking orders on a first come first serve basis in mid July. The cost of the tree varies based on the species offered with an average cost of approximately $150 per tree from each resident. The Forester likes to work with each homeowner to select the appropriate species for each parkway.
If the program’s time frame or tree selections are not preferable, you may also choose to submit a Parkway Landscaping Permit for our consideration. The permit is no cost to residents and enables the Village to update our tree inventory database and provide guidance on appropriate tree species selection.
The Village does not plant on private property. Funding for the program is subject to budgetary constraints. For further information, please review
landscaping in a landmark village (PDF).
3.
Does the Forester provide assistance regarding private property trees?
Riverside’s Forester oversees the maintenance and management of all public trees, including those in parks, triangles and parkways. From time to time, the Forester may provide advice regarding private trees. The Department of Public Works does not manage private property trees and does not get involved in private property issues.
4.
Can you recommend a tree company for tree removal or maintenance?
The Village cannot provide an official recommendation regarding a specific tree company. A certified arborist is strongly encouraged to ensure the contractor is knowledgeable and can apply proper arboricultural practices. The Forester advises all resident to obtain 3 separate quotes for work and confirm that the contractor carries the appropriate insurance to work on private property.
5.
Does the Village pick up my tree trimmings or storm damage?
The removal of private property yard waste or tree trimmings are to be bundled and placed for pick up by the current waste hauler. For further information on proper disposal, please visit the
Flood Brother's website for removal of debris.
6.
Will the forester inspect my tree?
Riverside’s Forester has the responsibility of all the public trees, including those in parks, triangles and parkways. He will check private trees for disease/damage as his schedule allows. When heavy storm damage occurs Public Works will sweep the Village for downed tree limbs etc. However, he will not normally pick up limbs from private property.
