Every day natural gas is delivered safely and efficiently to millions of businesses and homes in the United States through more than 2 million miles of underground pipeline. Nicor Gas operates, secures and maintains the pipeline in the local area. Part of the Nicor Gas safety strategy is educating the public on how to recognize a pipeline leak. Nicor shares three things to observe that can indicate a leak:
-LOOK for blowing dirt, discolored vegetation or continued bubbling of standing water.
-LISTEN for a hissing or roaring noise near a natural gas appliance or line.
-SMELL for the distinctive, rotten-egg odor associated with natural gas.
If you detect any signs of a pipeline leak, avoid using any sources of ignition, remove yourself from the area, and call Nicor Gas immediately at the 24-hour emergency response line at 888.Nicor4U (642-6748) with the location and type of emergency.
