In recognition of National Invasive Species Awareness Week, Riverside’s Landscape Advisory Commission is sharing information on invasive or native aggressive plants. The Chicago Region Invasive Plants document can help you identify 32 plants that are most damaging to our local ecosystem. The Identification Comparisons of Invasive Buckthorn to Native Plants document compares similarities and differences between Buckthorn, considered to be the most dangerous invasive in our area, to regional native benign plants.
If you find invasive plants on your property, it is recommended that you remove or destroy the plants. The documents offer additional websites and resources for confirming identification of suspected invasives.
If you have a question or comment regarding invasive plants or other landscape issues, you may email the Landscape Advisory Commission at LAC@riverside.il.us. Look for an announcement in March from the LAC about a new program related to invasive plants.
