In an effort to achieve the most economical pricing from contractors, the Village typically plans sidewalk repairs in conjunction with the annual Street Improvements Program. The 2022 Streets Program utilized Motor Fuel Tax and Rebuild Illinois bond proceeds. Both of these funding sources require coordination with the Illinois Department of Transportation which prolongs the planning and design process.
The 2022 Streets Improvement Program is ongoing; however, please note that concrete can be poured in a wide range of temperatures without creating any significant strength or durability concerns. When temperatures are forecast to fall below freezing during the first 72 hours of the curing process, there are additional steps for "winterization" that include covering the concrete with polyethylene sheeting, burlap, or waterproof paper. The sidewalk repairs that were completed yesterday along Addison Road were done so with borderline overnight temperature forecasts, therefore, the contractor covered the concrete with insulated sheeting to ensure a proper curing process.
The concrete being poured as part of the annual program undergoes strict quality control and quality assurance testing procedures at both the batching plant and in the field to ensure the concrete achieves the specified strength requirements. The Village also maintains a one-year warranty from the contractor as an additional assurance.
