If you or someone you know receives SNAP benefits, please be aware that food bought with SNAP benefits may be replaced if destroyed in a disaster. This includes fires, floods, tornadoes or other devastating events. The widespread power outages last week due to the storm qualifies SNAP recipients for food replacement.
SNAP recipients must complete form 1989 and submit to DHS within 10 days of the disaster or power outage. The disaster or power outage must be verified. If eligible, the SNAP replacement will be approved within 2 days of the signed request. SNAP replacement cannot be more than the SNAP benefit amount for the month of loss. The form is available here: https://www.dhs.state.il.us/onenetlibrary/12/documents/Forms/IL444-1989-IES.pdf
The form can be submitted to the resource center where the recipient applied for benefits. The nearest center to Riverside is:
