During the week of April 24-April 28, 2017 The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, AAA and many State and local Police Departments coordinated the first ever Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness Week. Over the course of the week Officers were encouraged to educate motorists about the dangers of using their cell phones while driving. The Riverside Police Department conducted an “Intensified Traffic Enforcement” detail on Monday April 24th to kick off this week. During the detail Officers focused on various areas in the Village and issued a total of 32 citations and 10 verbal warnings. Of these 32 citations, 12 of them were for illegal use of cell phones while driving. Other Officers during the week over the course of their patrol duties issued another 8 citations for illegal cell phone use. The Riverside Police Department issued a total of 20 citations to “distracted drivers”.
