Various large scale construction projects are underway this year in and around Riverside including Village, MWRD and IDOT projects. For details on these various projects see below.
FIRST DIVISION SEWER SEPARATION PROJECT – VILLAGE OF RIVERSIDE
This project began April 24 and is expected to be completed by October 6, 2017. The contractor will begin by mobilizing equipment, saw cutting pavement and televising the sewer main lines. Construction operations will include installing new storm sewer (12”-24” diameter), replacing some of the existing sanitary sewer mains, installing new outfall structures along the Des Plaines River, and temporary pavement patching. In some instances, work will also include removing and replacing driveway aprons, installing new water services, sidewalk, curb & gutter and sod restoration.
Roads will be closed to through traffic with intermittent lane closures while crews are working in an area. Stage 1 of the project begins on Millbridge Rd. There are 6 stages to the project.

HARLEM AVENUE RESURFACING – ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (IDOT)
This project is scheduled to begin April 24 and be completed by Fall 2017. Daily lane closures will take place on Harlem Avenue from Interstate 55 to 26th Street in Forest View, Stickney, Lyons, Riverside and Berwyn. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction with flaggers during construction activities. The closures will take place during the day and reopen by the evening. Motorists should expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment. SALT CREEK INTERCEPTING SEWER REHABILITATION PHASE II – METROPOLITAN WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT (MWRD)
PHASE II - DOWNTOWN RIVERSIDE
MWRD continues to rehabilitate the intercepting sanitary sewer that collects waste water from all the area municipalities and carries it to their treatment plant in Stickney. Phase II starts just north of the BNSF tracks on Longcommon and continues down Riverside Road to Miller Road. The majority of Forest Ave will open up once Phase II begins in mid-May. The right-turn only lane on westbound Forest Ave. at First Avenue will remain closed. The week of May 1st the contractor will be doing some minor lane blockage on Longcommon in front of Riverside Plumbing and on Riverside Road in front of the Police Department in order to access manholes and prepare for Phase II. During Phase II, the contractor will be working along Longcommon/Riverside Road.
Longcommon Rd./Riverside Rd. – northbound lanes closed between E. Burlington St. and E. Quincy St. One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open on the far western half of the roadway. Drivers are advised to follow the detours to Cowley Rd.
Riverside Rd. – one way southbound between Gage Rd. and Olmsted Rd. Drivers are advised to follow the detours to S. Herbert Rd.
In early summer the Riverside Rd. closure will extend to Blackhawk Rd. at that time a new detour will be posted directing northbound traffic to Delaplaine Rd.
- HOURS OF OPERATION: Work hours will typically be 7AM to 7PM, Monday through Friday. Saturdays are optional.
- NOISE DURING OVERNIGHT HOURS: The village's noise ordinance restricts construction noise during non-working hours. However, due to the local and regional importance of this project, special permission has been granted provided that reasonable accommodations are taken to limit the noise disruption. This geopolymer lining takes up to 5-days to cure. Trucks with specialized equipment and water-heating machinery will need to operate overnight. We thank you for your patience and cooperation to complete this very important project.
- TIMELINE: The tentative start date for this phase of the project is April 24, 2017 and the planned completion date is November 2018.
- CONTACTS: The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago can be reached at 312.751.5600. Specify the project and your call will be directed to the proper representative. The Riverside Department of Public Works can be reached at 708-442-3590.
- PROJECT BACKGROUND: This project will improve the structural integrity of MWRD’s interceptor. Rather than excavation and replacement of these pipes, a process called spray applied lining is being utilized. This involves pumping a geopolymer material into the sewer and spraying it along the inside of the existing sewer. This process is used in lieu of costly, time-consuming, and disruptive excavation. The work will require the collective efforts of several contractors to complete sewer cleaning, geopolymer spray lining, manhole rehabilitation and structure rehabilitation work.

TRAIN STATION ROOF REPLACEMENT PROJECT – VILLAGE OF RIVERSIDE
This project will begin on May 4 and be completed within 65 days working days. Construction includes the removal and inspection of all the existing clay tiles, repairing the roof to make it water tight, replacing and/or reusing the clay tiles and painting the soffit and fascia. The project will be phased, working on the west pavilion first, then the east pavilion and the building itself last. The platform will be accessible at all times during the project; however, some exterior doors to the station may be inaccessible during various phases of construction. Commuters should exercise extra care and caution as they approach and leave the Train Station. Please allow extra time to reach the platform. The Village does not anticipate traffic will be impacted by this project. Please see the following link for a map of the project: http://arcg.is/2pmcsiM
