Before severe storms, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) will lower the levels of the Chicago Area Waterway System. They work around the clock to manage the excess water coming in to the 7 water reclamation plants. To help reduce the strain on the system and prevent local flooding, residents are encouraged to reduce their water usage. Waiting to run the dishwasher, shower, or do the laundry until after the rain subsides would be much appreciated.
If flooding in our area does occur, please remember these instructions for staying safe:
- Never drive around barricades. They are used to safely direct traffic out of flooded areas. Do not walk or swim through flooded waters.
- Get to the highest level if trapped in a building. Only get on the roof if necessary and, once there, signal for help. Do not climb into a closed attic to avoid getting trapped by rising floodwater.
- Be aware of the risk of electrocution. Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water. Turn off the electricity to prevent electric shock if it is safe to do so.
- Avoid wading in floodwater, which can be contaminated and contain dangerous debris. Underground or downed power lines can also electrically charge the water.
- Listen to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio or our local alert system for current emergency information and instructions
