Sedge Plants Along the River

Volunteers Planting Sedges along the River - 9-18-2021

On September 18, a dedicated group of landscape volunteers joined Village Forester Mike Collins to install sedge plugs along the Des Plaines River.  Native sedges were installed to kick start a restoration process along the riverbank between Indian Gardens and the Scout Cabin. Species include; gray, emory, hop, palm and fox sedges planted along the riverbank.  These sedges are adapted to live and thrive along the riverbanks of bottomland forests.  Previous landscape workdays in May, June, and July were spent clearing and controlling invasive species to make way for these native sedges.  During the landscape workday, perennial wild rye seed was also collected and scattered in the plating area to help colonize the area.  A huge thanks goes to the Frederick Law Olmsted Society of Riverside for several donations to start this restoration process and their continued support for our historic landscape.  Our Volunteers in the Forest are an amazing group of residents and their tireless dedication to these restoration and preservation efforts cannot be matched.  A special thanks to Shawn Sinn for donating his time and expertise to the restoration process.  The Village is very grateful for this support!
